Entry is £10 for a team of four, and all proceeds will go towards improving irrigation in Sintet.

Sintet is a village on Gambia’s southern border with Senegal about 80 miles inland from the Atlantic Ocean. The population of 1,000 people grow cassava, sweet potato, and corn, and raise livestock, but many villagers move away to study and then get work in order to support their families back at home.

The 2 main challenges for the farmers are wild animals eating the crops, and the very hot climate restricting the opportunity to grow crops within and immediately following the rainy season (June to October). Project Gambia initially funded the fencing off of a hectare (about two thirds of the War Memorial ground) to keep the animals out. As a result villagers have been able to grow more food to eat, and also to grow cashew nuts as a cash crop in order to raise funds for equipment. The size of the fenced off area has since been doubled and the plan now is to pay for the drilling of a bore hole and a solar powered irrigation system so that the farm has water all year round and the growing season can be extended.
