MATCH REPORT (Women's FA Cup 3QR): Stourbridge Ladies 3 Crusaders 0

Richard Clark1 Nov 2020 - 17:16

The Glassgirls made more FA Cup history at the War Memorial Ground as they stormed through to the First Round Proper of the Women's FA Cup!

Andy Fisher's side led at the break through Ruby Meeson's close-range strike, but it took late goals from Amber Lawrence and Courteney Murphy to add gloss to the scoreline.

The final result might suggest another routine win, but that doesn't tell the story of a match in which Stourbridge had to show all their battling qualities against a strong Crusaders outfit.

There were few chances early on, although Carly Aldred was close to getting on the end of Esme Moran's low cross in the 3rd minute. The Glassgirls defence had to deal with some probing from the visitors and there was the occasional moment of concern when balls came into the box, but it took until 21 minutes for either keeper to be tested when a flowing move down the left ended with Murphy's piledriver being pushed over the bar well by Justine Lewis

The resulting corner, however, saw Stour take the lead as Lawrence's delivery was helped on at the near post for RUBY MEESON to force the ball home via a slight deflection.

The visitors responded well, but it was Stourbridge who continued to have the better chances. Lili-Beth Bown broke clear only to be thwarted by a good challenge, and then Aldred was put through but couldn't get her shot on target.

There were shouts for a Glassgirls penalty waved away shortly before the interval after a challenge on Aldred, as Stour went into the break with their slender lead.

A lull in the early stages of the second period gave way to increased action at either end. Crusaders pressed a resolute Stourbridge back line in which centre-backs Sophie Heaselgrave and Macey Turvey both excelled, whilst Stour continued to fashion openings on the break.

Substitute Hollie Somers was close to a second goal, with Lewis smothering the chance at her feet, and then Crusaders spurned their best chance of the game when Alice Lilley lifted her shot just over Preston's crossbar.

Aldred was proving a continual thorn in Crusaders defence with her pace, and was only denied when Lewis came out of her area to block and clear, before then clipping a shot wide under a challenge and finally seeing her powerful shot clawed away.

With 86 minutes played the cushion of a second goal finally came. Alex Nicklin spread the ball to Somers in space on the right hand side of the area and her low cross was perfect for AMBER LAWRENCE to tuck home into the bottom corner.

And COURTENEY MURPHY put the seal on things with a 20-yard left foot shot in stoppage time that drifted just beyond Lewis's reach to make it 3-0.

The draw for the First Round Proper is due to be announced at 1pm on Monday, with ties earmarked to be played on Sunday 15th November. However, that is expected to change with the lockdown, and further information will be announced in due course.
