Farsley Celtic 1 Stourbridge 4 - Report

Nigel Gregg25 Mar 2018 - 20:00

Stourbridge got back to winning ways in some style with an excellent 4 – 1 victory away to play-off chasing Farsley Celtic. (READ ON)

The West Yorkshire hosts had won the reverse fixture at Amblecote 2 – 1 just over a month earlier and had since won their last three league games to boost their hopes of a top five finish in their first season back at this level, but they were undone by a Glassboys side that delivered one of their best all-round displays of the season so far.

Stuart Pierpoint returned to the side with Aaron Hayden moving to right-back as Brad Birch was unavailable, while Wolves loanee Nicu Carnat made his first start in place of Tom Tonks.

The home side survived an early scare when keeper Graeme McKibbin slipped and inadvertently carried the ball outside his area, however the resulting free-kick from Luke Benbow hit the wall.

In the 5th minute Farsley forged in-front from the penalty spot after Stuart Pierpoint was harshly judged to have tripped Nathan Turner, although he appeared to play the ball first. Ryan Watson sent Matt Gould the wrong way from the subsequent spot-kick.

Stourbridge responded well to that early set-back, however, and were back on level terms on 11 minutes. Chris Gallagher gained possession in midfield and clipped a good pass into Nicu Carnat who carried the ball to the left-hand by-line before pulling a low cross back into the path of Luke Benbow who tucked home the equaliser.

The visitors threatened again four minutes later. Carnat fed Kaiman Anderson on the edge of the box and he worked room for a shot from the left-hand side of the area that McKibbin got safely behind.

The game settled down for a time after that before Stourbridge went close again after 31 minutes. Good work from Carnat on the left again unhinged the home defence who were unable to clear the ball and Forde was able to find Benbow and he turned and struck a low shot narrowly wide of the far post.

Five minutes later a free-kick from Pierpoint saw Hayden win the first header to enable Anderson to turn and hit a shot just past McKibbin’s left-hand post.

Farsley replied with a flowing move three minutes before the break as Paul Walker combined with Nathan Cartman through the left channel area initially and following an exchange of passes, Walker cut the ball back for Cartman to try a side-foot finish that was too close to Gould who was able to get down and save.

On the stroke of half-time Stourbridge might have gone ahead. Hayden played the ball into Broadhurst and his inswinging cross from the right towards the far post picked up Carnat, but he sent his stooping header against the base of the upright.

Farsley were first to threaten after the re-start with Lewis Turner producing a determined run forward before cracking a shot on goal that Gould saved down to his right.

With 57 minutes gone though the Glassboys struck the decisive blow. A diagonal free-kick from Pierpoint towards the far post area was met by a header from Hayden before Paul McCone volleyed the ball past McKibbin from close range.

Two minutes later Benbow released Carnat through the middle and he tried to go around McKibbin, but showed him too much of the ball and the home stopper saved at his feet, however Farsley quickly lost possession again and this time Anderson pulled the ball back for Benbow and his low shot squirmed through the keeper’s grasp and trickled into the net to double the visitors lead.

Stourbridge continued to press with a low 30-yard free-kick from Benbow lacking the power to trouble McKibbin unduly.

Farsley rang the changes and began to chase the game. In the 75th minute a left-wing corner from Watson enabled Nathan Turner to get in a far post header that Gould collected safely.

Josh Cooke was introduced up-front in place of Benbow after 77 minutes and within a couple of minutes a poor defensive clearance rebounded kindly to Cooke who turned the ball across goal to Anderson, who lofted his great chance to kill the game off over the bar.

Luke Shearer then replaced the impressive Carnat for the last ten minutes before a better spell for the hosts saw the Glassboys goal come under more pressure. A deep cross from the right was seized upon by sub Luke Parkin and he forced Gould into a save at his near post, turning the ball round the post for a corner.

Two minutes later a left-wing cross from Watson was headed goalwards by Danny Ellis - who had been pushed forward into the attack - but Gould saved comfortably.

Tom Tonks came on for the closing minutes in place of Anderson to help shore things up.

The last chance for the hosts came on 90 minutes when Adam Clayton could only head wide from another Watson flag-kick and the icing on the cake for Stourbridge came in stoppage time as a low 20-yard shot from Cooke found the bottom corner of the net to wrap up a well deserved win.
